Kathmandu Cancer Center offers wire localization-guided surgery for breast cancer, an advanced technique designed to accurately locate small or non-palpable breast lesions.

Here’s a simple explanation of this breast cancer treatment process:

For large breast cancers that haven’t spread far:

  1. Shrinking the tumor first: Doctors give chemotherapy (cancer medicine) to make the tumor smaller before surgery.
  2. Marking the spot: After 2 rounds of chemotherapy, doctors place a tiny marker (like a small clip) inside the tumor. They use ultrasound or mammogram images to guide them to the exact spot.
  3. Getting ready for surgery: After all the chemotherapy is finished, on the day of surgery, doctors put a thin wire into the breast. The wire points to where the tumor is located. A radiologist (imaging doctor) uses mammogram or ultrasound pictures to place the wire in exactly the right spot.
  4. During surgery: The surgeon follows the wire to find and remove the tumor completely and accurately.
  5. Checking the results: After removing the tumor, doctors take an X-ray picture of the removed tissue (specimen mammogram) to make sure they got all the cancer and that the edges around the tumor are clear of cancer cells.

This offers hope of possible breast conservation surgery even in locally advanced breast carcinoma after neoadjuvant chemotherapy

This step-by-step process helps doctors remove the cancer completely while being as precise as possible.
