What We Treat

Blood Cancers Treated at KCC

Our haematology team manages the full range of blood and bone marrow cancers — in adults and children. Every treatment plan is explained in simple language so you and your family understand what is happening and why.

Leukemia

Cancer of blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. The four main types — ALL, AML, CLL, and CML — each have different treatments. CML, for example, is now managed with daily tablets (imatinib) with excellent outcomes.

ALL · AML · CLL · CML

Lymphoma

Cancer of the lymph glands. Hodgkin lymphoma is highly curable with chemotherapy. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma has many subtypes (DLBCL, follicular, mantle cell) — our team diagnoses and treats them all, including with CAR-T for relapsed cases.

Hodgkin · Non-Hodgkin · DLBCL · Follicular

Multiple Myeloma

Cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Often causes bone pain, anaemia, and kidney problems. Modern treatment with bortezomib, lenalidomide, and daratumumab has dramatically improved survival. CAR-T is available for relapsed myeloma.

Smouldering · Active · Relapsed/Refractory

MDS & Myeloproliferative

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), polycythaemia vera, essential thrombocythaemia, and myelofibrosis are commonly under-diagnosed in Nepal. Our pathology team — with flow cytometry and molecular testing — provides precise diagnosis and risk stratification.

MDS · PV · ET · Myelofibrosis

Paediatric Blood Cancers

Children with leukemia and lymphoma are treated by Dr Ritu Lamichhane, our dedicated Paediatric Haemato-Oncologist trained at Tata Medical Center. Childhood ALL has cure rates above 85% with proper treatment — your child does not need to go to India.

Childhood ALL · AML · Lymphoma

Aplastic Anaemia & Rare

Aplastic anaemia (bone marrow failure), Waldenström macroglobulinemia, and other rare blood disorders require specialist haematology expertise. These conditions can now be diagnosed and managed at KCC without travelling abroad.

Aplastic Anaemia · Waldenström

Not sure what type of blood cancer you have?

Many patients come to us with only "blood cancer" on their report. Our team will review your bone marrow biopsy, blood counts, and reports and give you a clear diagnosis — explained in plain language. WhatsApp us your reports for a free initial review.

Treatment Options

How We Treat Blood Cancer at KCC

Blood cancer treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Your plan depends on the cancer type, stage, age, and overall fitness. We explain every option clearly before starting — in Nepali if you prefer.

Most Advanced Option

CAR-T Cell Therapy

A revolutionary immunotherapy where your own blood cells are re-engineered in a laboratory to find and destroy cancer cells. Previously available only in India or abroad — now accessible in Nepal through KCC's Cellular Therapy Clinic.

  • Best for: Relapsed or treatment-resistant B-cell lymphoma, ALL, and multiple myeloma
  • One infusion: Can produce deep, long-lasting remissions
  • Available now: KCC City Clinic, New Baneshwor, Kathmandu
  • Assessment: Ask our haematologist if you are eligible

Chemotherapy

First-line treatment for most blood cancers. Proven regimens like R-CHOP (lymphoma), HyperCVAD (ALL), and BMP/VRd (myeloma) are administered by trained oncology nurses in a safe, monitored setting at KCC.

Targeted & Oral Therapy

Drugs like imatinib (CML), ibrutinib (CLL/lymphoma), venetoclax, and bortezomib target specific cancer pathways. Many are taken as daily tablets at home. We monitor you closely for side effects and response.

Immunotherapy & Antibodies

Rituximab (lymphoma), daratumumab (myeloma), and other monoclonal antibodies help your immune system recognise and kill cancer cells — often with fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy.

Radiation Therapy

Used selectively in blood cancers — for lymphoma consolidation, CNS prophylaxis, solitary plasmacytoma, and palliative bone pain in myeloma. KCC's radiation oncology department is on the main campus in Bhaktapur.

What is CAR-T Cell Therapy?

CAR-T stands for Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy. Doctors collect blood cells from your body, re-programme them in a specialised laboratory to recognise your specific cancer, then infuse them back into your bloodstream. These engineered cells hunt down and destroy cancer cells — even when surgery, chemotherapy, and other treatments have stopped working.

Your own cells — reprogrammed No donor needed. Uses your own T-cells, collected from a simple blood procedure (leukapheresis).
Precisely targeted Engineered to recognise specific proteins (like CD19 or BCMA) only on your cancer cells.
Long-lasting protection CAR-T cells can persist in the body for months or years and continue fighting cancer relapse.
Now available in Nepal KCC City Clinic, New Baneshwor, Kathmandu. No travel to India or abroad required.

Is CAR-T right for me?

CAR-T therapy is used in specific situations — usually for patients whose cancer has come back after 2 or more lines of treatment (relapsed/refractory large B-cell lymphoma, ALL, or multiple myeloma). Our haematologist will review your full history and test results to assess eligibility. WhatsApp your reports to ask.

Diagnosis & Laboratory

Strong Pathology — The Foundation of Good Treatment

Accurate diagnosis is everything in blood cancer. The wrong diagnosis means the wrong treatment. KCC's dedicated haematopathology team ensures your diagnosis is precise before any treatment begins.

KCC Haematopathology Laboratory

Our pathologists work hand-in-hand with haematologists. Every bone marrow biopsy and peripheral blood film is reviewed by specialists. We do not just report a number — we give you a diagnosis you can act on.

Second Opinion on Your Pathology Reports

If you have a blood cancer diagnosis from another hospital in Nepal or abroad and want a second opinion, our pathology and haematology team can review your bone marrow slides, biopsy blocks, and flow cytometry data. Send your reports on WhatsApp to get started.

Common Questions

Blood Cancer FAQs — Nepal

Questions we hear every day from patients and their families. Plain language answers from our haematology team.

KCC treats all major blood cancers: leukemia (ALL, AML, CLL, CML), Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (DLBCL, follicular, mantle cell), multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), aplastic anaemia, polycythaemia vera, and Waldenström macroglobulinemia. Both adult and paediatric patients are managed by our specialist team.
Yes. KCC's City Clinic in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu has a dedicated Cellular Therapy Clinic providing CAR-T cell therapy for eligible patients. This is available for relapsed or refractory B-cell lymphoma, ALL, and multiple myeloma. Patients no longer need to travel to India or abroad for this treatment. Learn more about our Cellular Therapy Clinic.
All three are blood cancers but they start in different cells and in different places. Leukemia starts in the bone marrow and affects blood cell production — causing fatigue, infections, and easy bruising. Lymphoma starts in the lymph glands (nodes) and lymphatic system — the first sign is often a painless swelling in the neck, armpit, or groin. Multiple myeloma affects plasma cells in the bone marrow and typically causes bone pain, anaemia, and kidney problems. Each type needs a different treatment approach.
A dedicated BMT unit is currently being developed at KCC and is in the pipeline. At present, we perform the complete pre-BMT evaluation including HLA typing, disease staging, organ function testing, and fitness assessment. Where BMT is required urgently, our team will coordinate with trusted partner centres and support you through that process. We will announce the BMT unit launch when it is ready.
The simplest way to start is to WhatsApp your reports — blood counts (CBC), bone marrow biopsy report, biopsy slides, and any scans — to our team. A haematologist will review them and contact you to arrange an appointment. You can also walk into KCC City Clinic in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu for a same-day haematology consultation. Please bring all previous reports, scan CDs, and biopsy slides with you.
Treatment costs at KCC are generally significantly lower than comparable centres in India — and that is before accounting for travel, accommodation, visa, and lost income for accompanying family members. A single trip to India for treatment can cost NPR 1–3 lakh in travel and accommodation alone. At KCC, you receive comparable quality care in Nepal, close to your family and support network. Please contact us for a cost estimate specific to your treatment plan.
