HDR interstitial brachytherapy for lip and buccal mucosa carcinoma: technique, outcomes, and cosmetic results

Pandit S, Sapkota S, Adhikari A, Yadav D, Yogal R et al. · Kathmandu Cancer Center

Key findings

100% local control across all patients at a median follow-up of 29 months. 77% of cases rated as having good cosmetic outcomes by independent expert review. All procedures performed under local anaesthesia — including patients in their nineties with significant comorbidities who would not have tolerated surgery or general anaesthesia.

This is the first published outcomes series for image guided lip and buccal mucosa brachytherapy from Nepal. It establishes that interstitial HDR brachytherapy is both feasible and effective at a resource-appropriate centre outside a high-income setting — and that cosmetic preservation is achievable without surgery for this cancer site.

CT-guided HDR interstitial brachytherapy for lung lesions: feasibility and outcomes in a resource-limited setting

Sapkota S, Pandit S et al. · Kathmandu Cancer Center

Key findings

Feasibility and outcome data for CT-guided interstitial brachyablation — a single high-dose fraction delivered directly into the lung tumour — for both primary lung lesions and oligometastatic disease. KCC is among a handful of centres in South Asia performing this procedure.

Lung brachyablation requires interventional radiology expertise, a dedicated radiation oncology team, and real-time CT guidance. It is rarely offered outside high-volume centres in the USA, Europe, and a small number of Asian institutions. This paper demonstrates that the procedure can be safely performed outside that traditional context.

Interstitial brachytherapy for internal mammary lymph node involvement in breast cancer: a case report

Co-author: Pandit S · PMID: 37425203

Clinical significance

A novel application of interstitial brachytherapy to a clinically challenging site — the internal mammary chain — that is difficult to irradiate adequately with external beams without significant cardiac or pulmonary dose. Documents technique and feasibility as a case report.

HyBIRT — Hybrid Brachytherapy followed by IMRT

HyBIRT is a prospective study evaluating the combination of interstitial brachytherapy with intensity-modulated external radiotherapy for tongue cancer — specifically in patients who are not suitable for surgery or who choose not to have it. The hypothesis is that delivering a high local dose via brachytherapy, followed by target-volume coverage with IMRT, offers better local control than either modality alone while preserving speech and swallowing function.

Patient recruitment and follow-up are ongoing. Results will be submitted for publication when the dataset matures.
