HDR interstitial brachytherapy for lip and buccal mucosa carcinoma: technique, outcomes, and cosmetic results
Key findings
100% local control across all patients at a median follow-up of 29 months. 77% of cases rated as having good cosmetic outcomes by independent expert review. All procedures performed under local anaesthesia — including patients in their nineties with significant comorbidities who would not have tolerated surgery or general anaesthesia.
This is the first published outcomes series for image guided lip and buccal mucosa brachytherapy from Nepal. It establishes that interstitial HDR brachytherapy is both feasible and effective at a resource-appropriate centre outside a high-income setting — and that cosmetic preservation is achievable without surgery for this cancer site.
