Biopsy in Kathmandu: the test, the report and the plan in one place
A biopsy is frightening mostly because of the waiting afterwards. At KCC the same team does the biopsy, studies it in our own lab, and then sits with you to decide what to do next. You do not have to run between hospitals with a report in your hand.
In short
What happens after the biopsy
Biopsy
A small sample is taken with a needle, a thin camera or a small cut, depending on the place.
Our own lab
Our pathologists study it under the microscope. Special stains and molecular tests are done as one set, so you are not sent to different labs.
Tumour board
If it is cancer, surgeons, radiation doctors and medical oncologists discuss your case together.
Your plan
Your doctor sits with you and your family and explains the next step in plain words.
Which biopsy do I need?
It depends on where the problem is. Tap your area to read about that cancer and its treatment at KCC.
Breast lump
Needle biopsy with ultrasound guidance.
Lung
Bronchoscopy or CT-guided biopsy. Our team decides which one suits you.
Thyroid
FNAC, a thin needle test for a neck lump.
Liver
CT or ultrasound guided needle biopsy.
Food pipe and stomach
Endoscopy with biopsy.
Bowel
Colonoscopy with biopsy and polyp removal.
Blood and bone marrow
Bone marrow biopsy.
Prostate
Biopsy for a raised PSA.
Cervix
Colposcopy and cervical biopsy.
Gynae- uterus
Endometrial biopsy.
Bladder
Cystoscopy with biopsy.
Mouth and tongue
Biopsy of an ulcer or patch.
Skin
Skin biopsy for a mole or wound.
Lymph node, bone and deep lumps
CT or ultrasound guided biopsy.
Not sure which one applies to you? Send your scan report on WhatsApp and our team will guide you.
CT or ultrasound guidance
Ultrasound is used for lumps near the skin, such as the breast, neck, liver and many lymph nodes. CT is used for lumps that are deep or hidden behind bone or air, such as the lung, bone and deep abdomen. Your doctor chooses. Both are safe. See image-guided treatment without surgery.
Cost: it depends on the biopsy and the tests needed. Call or WhatsApp us and we will give you an estimate before the day.
Questions people ask us
KCC does biopsies for most parts of the body: breast, lung, thyroid, liver, food pipe, stomach, bowel, bone marrow, prostate, cervix, womb, bladder, mouth and skin. The sample is studied in our own pathology lab.
Please call 01-5091629 or WhatsApp 9818-226237 first. Different biopsies need different preparation, and we do not want you to travel and then be sent back.
All scan films or CDs, scan reports, old biopsy or blood reports, your list of medicines, and one family member.
It depends. Endoscopy, colonoscopy and some CT-guided biopsies need an empty stomach, and colonoscopy needs bowel cleaning the day before. A thyroid FNAC or skin biopsy usually does not. We tell you exactly when you book.
Do not stop any medicine on your own. Tell us when you book. For some biopsies the doctor will ask you to stop a blood thinner for a few days, and will tell you how.
The area is numbed first, so most people feel pressure and a short sting, not sharp pain. For endoscopy and colonoscopy you are made sleepy or comfortable. Mild soreness for a day or two is common.
A needle test like FNAC takes a few minutes. CT or ultrasound guided biopsy, endoscopy and colonoscopy take longer, and you rest for a few hours afterwards. Most patients go home the same day. Your doctor will tell you if you need to stay.
After a simple needle biopsy most people can. After sedation, a lung biopsy or a bone marrow biopsy, plan to rest for the day and avoid heavy lifting for a day or two. Your doctor will advise you.
After sedation you should not travel alone, and a family member can hear the instructions with you. We also understand that families like to be there.
Usually in 3 to 5 working days, because our pathology lab is inside KCC. Special stains and molecular tests can take longer, and we tell you in advance when to come back.
No. Many families fear this, but a biopsy done correctly does not spread cancer. Delaying the biopsy only delays the right treatment.
This can happen, and it is not your fault or ours. We may repeat the test, take a larger sample, or use a different method. We explain the reason and the next step.
Yes. Bring the slides, blocks and reports. Our pathologists can review them, and sometimes a repeat biopsy is not needed.
If it is cancer, our surgeons, radiation doctors and medical oncologists discuss your case together at the tumour board. Your doctor then explains the plan to you and your family. If it is not cancer, we explain what it is and what follow-up you need.
It depends on the biopsy and the tests needed. Call or WhatsApp us and we will give you an estimate before the day.
